Consecutive Interpretation

Consecutive interpretation is mainly used for medium-sized formal meetings, technical exchanges, business negotiations, high-level academic conferences, and trainings, etc.

In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter sits in the conference room and takes notes while listening to the speaker. When the speaker finishes his or her statement or pauses to let the interpreter speak, the interpreter expresses the content and information of the statement in entirety in the target language, using clear, accurate, and complete wording. Consecutive interpretation requires the interpreter to be able to comprehend three to ten minutes of continuous, uninterrupted speech and be able to accurately and fully translate it using excellent presentation skills.

Is Consecutive Interpretation Easier than Continuous Interpretation?

Whether it's simultaneous or consecutive interpretation, thegoal is to allow people who speak different languages to have clear, unobstructed, and instant communication.  In fact, there is no difference in the level of difficulty between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. The two types of interpretation are complimentary, and their function and skill requirements are identical. Qualified conference interpreters should have mastery of the skills required for both types of interpretation.

The two types of interpretation are typically used in different situations. Consecutive interpretation is generally used for smaller-scale occasions that only involve two working languages. Some examples are diplomatic consultation meetings, bilateral negotiations, inspection visits, small-scale negotiations, reporter interviews, judicial and quasi-judicial procedures, banquet speeches, press conferences and short, small-scale seminars. Simultaneous interpretation, because it doesn't take up additional meeting time, has become the most commonly used type of interpretation for conferences, and is widely used in all types of international forums. Almost all formal, international, multi-language conferences and international organizations have adopted simultaneous interpretation as the standard mode of interpretation.

Business Interpretation

Business interpretation includes business meetings and negotiations, foreign travel, factory or site visits, exhibitions, and other similar occasions. Although all of these occasions qualify as business interpretation, the skill level and type of interpreter needed is very different.
